Scott Steiner set the last of his gear down. His combat suit, weapons, and other personal belongs lumped into a pile next to the bed. He had left the lights on low as he looked around thinking of a similar room on another ship not so long ago. Shaking his head, as her face, body and the very taste of her briefly filled his memory. He mentally chided himself for getting soft, but he was surprised no one had ever gotten that close to him.

Tapping his console he sent a request to meet with the Captain and then the Chief Intelligence Officer. He still wore a non-standard uniform which was okay for some Intel units but not on all ships. Scott would find out what was expected of him soon. Sitting down on the chair before the terminal he saw he had a message from Lt. Eliana Adler of the USS Aquitania. Smiling inspite of himself he opened the electronic missive. Her face appeared before him, her dark hair loose and formed gentle waves that framed her delicate features. Her face was tenatively cautious as she spoke softly her dark sensual eyes dropped to her hands as she apologized for refusing to see him before he left. Her lilting accent filled his ears as she told him that she knew long distance relationships were impossible but she wanted to know if they could still send each other messages... keep in touch. He could see her embarrassment at making the request but she continued and then looked up as if she could see into his eyes right now. "I miss you Scott." Her voice was sure as she finished the message. The image winked off replaced with the Samurai's and Starfleet crests on the screen.

He called up her picture and had it remain on the screen. "Computer please record message." The computer activated the application as Scott Steiner soon found himself slightly nervous which surprised him. "Eliana, I would like to keep in touch with you... I'm still getting everything settled here so I have to be brief but... I miss you too Eliana and normally I don't miss anyone at all." He ended the message and sent it. The shot of her face remained on the screen as he leaned back shaking his head as he mused silently on his feelings long dormant.

A chime sounded as he saw he had a return message from the Captain.

The computer screen flashed the LCARS symbol and then the image of Captain Nelson's Acting Yeoman appeared on the screen. She was just a Chief Petty Officer with few features of notice. Her hair flowed down to her neck and it was dusty brown, as were her eyes. "Ensign Scott Steiner, you have the priviledge of having a meeting with the Captain. Please make your way to his Ready Room at once." Her voice strained as the next line came. "Be warned, the Captain is quite...eccentric. That is all." The screen flashed back to LCARS, and Josiah waited in his Ready Room for the Ensign to arrive.

Scott stood up smoothing his dark blue uniform, glancing unconsciously at the picture on the view screen. His hand rested on the hand grip of the phaser pistol he wore in the combat belt. The door slid open allowing a bright light to fill the entrance, Scott’s eyes narrowed against the glare as he strode into the brightly lit dominant white and brown corridor. Within eight minutes he found himself at the door his mind replaying the Yeoman’s warning about the Captain being eccentric. He palmed the door chimed.

Josiah was reading a paper from Starfleet Science about the latest discoveries for the Periodic Table when the door to his Ready Room chimed through. He needed to take a break from reading anyways, but that didn't stop him from having his usual sarcastically playful mood for whomever decided to pester him at this time. Even if the meeting was scheduled, Josiah wasn't going to let anything ruin his fun. "Please, come in."

The door slid open quietly as Scott Steiner stepped through. His eyes glanced around the room cataloguing items any possible exits and potential weapons. He generally by reflexive did a threat assessment for any new rooms and environments he entered. His eyes settled on the man before him who looked comfortable both in his environment. Nodding to the commanding officer, Scott spoke.

"Ensign Scott Steiner, reporting as directed... sir." The voice was calm and somewhat grim but not menacing or threatening. The words spoken as a matter of fact not arrogant or subservient.

Josiah kept reading his PaDD knowing full well that he'd have to drop it sooner or later. For the moment, he wasn't intrigued by the Ensign, and so he felt as though his easy methods of dealing with crewmembers would suffice for now. "Well, are you just going to keep standing there or are you going to take a seat?" Josiah hadn't read the personnel record of the man, and so wasn't aware just what he was setting himself up for.

"Well now that you have mentioned it Captain... I'll wait till I am offered a seat, but thank you for your concern sir. If you are offering then yes I wouldn't mind one while I wait for you finished reading. The article on Kalasian Comparative Morals were an interesting read." Scott spoke even with a matter of fact tone.

The Captain took a moment to stop reading and lifted his eyes up to meet the man standing in his office. He knew from that point that this particular officer was going to be so fun to mess around with, that he'd not even have to break a sweat carrying out his plans. "Ah hah, I take it that you didn't catch my hint. If you're ever going to survive on this ship, you gotta learn how to relax. Now please, sit down."

Scott sat down shifting his chair slightly to keep the door within his peripheral vision and nodded at the Captain. "I've heard that from other Captains on other ships with mixed results... complacency has been an occupational hazard I have learned to avoid the hard way... but I will strive to... flex in that area." Glancing around the officer cursorily this time he added. "Nice ship you have here Captain Nelson."

"Hahaha." Josiah couldn't help but give a laugh for what Scott had to say. It seemed so rehearsed and practiced, Josiah wondered about the new Ensign's social bearings on the ship. "Oh, I'm not like other Captains. Most of those geezers are only concerned with authority and power, and being a slave to Starfleet Command. Me on the other hand, I prefer to challenge them in such inconspicuous ways; it's really quite fun if you're paying attention." The Captain took a drink from his mocha and grinned. "As for having a good ship, why thank you. We try to lend ourselves to developing community before command, and it seems to work wonders around here. So, what brings an Ensign like yourself to my corner of the galaxy?"

"Orders..." Scott shrugged. "I made an agreement with Starfleet to serve again. As an Ensign I'm an old man, but I could care less, I'm here to get the job done." Scott gave Nelson a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "On previous ships I had been a guest of sorts... its been about a decade or so since I've been a member of a Fleeter crew." Scott leaned back slighty his eyes on the captain.

Josiah quickly made a mental note to delve into the man's service record after the meeting was over. The Ensign had said some intriging things, and Josiah knew he wasn't going to be able to learn about his past by asking the man. "I see, well it would seem that Starfleet is happy to have you back, but not so much happy as to prevent your assignment to my ship. How was your transfer here from your last stationing?"

"This is my first official stationing as a member of Starfleet, I took an abbreviated Academy Officer Course during my trip here. Before that I was offered an incentive to make a career change and I think my assignment here was to be purposeful and not as much as spiteful." Scott spoke with a small smile.

"That makes a lot of sense, actually. I'm afraid you've not yet answered my question though." Josiah took another sip of his mocha and looked at the man quizically. There was something odd, something not right about something, and Josiah wasn't quite able to put his finger on it. It bothered him like a mosquito around someone's ears. "Where were you when you received your orders to transfer to the Samurai?"

Steiner shrugged. "I was a private military contractor with Valennia Arms Co. as part of Hydra II. I had just completed a contract with Starfleet to break a pirate up... it was successful." Scott knew that several of the Fleeters disliked mercenaries and some were definitely justified. He waited for the Captain's response but either way it wouldn't bother him.

"Hmmm." Josiah had finally learned something about the Ensign's past, something he could use to his advantage. However, he wanted to know more so his didn't use this particular bit of ammunition just yet. "You're lucky I'm not like most Starfleet Captains. It doesn't rub me the wrong way that you were a mercenary at all. Was it work you enjoyed doing?"

Scott nodded with a small shrug. "I was luckier than most. My contracts were mainly with the Federation and I had taken on a fair share of pirates, slave traders and other assorted enemies of the Federation. Often the pay was good and so were the results of my missions for the most part." Scott's eyes stayed on Josiah's. "I usually worked as an intelligence advisor and operative to the Fleeters and Marines. More often then not I worked the missions that were too delicate for a shuttle full of Marines or a spread of photon torpedoes." He nodded. "So yes I found a certain amount of pride in it that had nothing to do with the pay."

The Captain's eyes narrowed downwards and a wry grin was born from the underside of his face. He knew that the new Ensign was going to like it here, as there was much to discover and take care of in unusual manners. "I see; those are great skills to have and I'm very happy that you'll be using them now for the ship and crew instead of just top secret Federation missions by yourself. I believe you'll also enjoy the company of our resident Intelligence Chief, Alex Winters. You should check in with him soon." The Ensign's past definitely intrigued Josiah, but even the Captain knew he didn't have enough skills to get at the whole piece. And so, he was left to trust his long-time friend Alex to find out for him.

"I will sir. I'll work hard to get back into team mode." Scott knew he had a tendency to run an op lone wolf, though he had learned to play nice with others before and was sure he could again.

Josiah was pleased to say the least with the new Intelligence officer, and he could see from just talking with the man that social situations on the ship were about to get more interesting, even moreso than they already were. "Excellent, I'm glad to hear that. Now, is there anything else you'd like to discuss before you get to work?"

"No sir." Scott up and nodded to his new commanding officer.

The Captain waved his hand a bit and grinned some more before letting the new Ensign get started with his own work onboard the ship. It was really something special that the Samurai was getting so many new and unique officers. "Alright then, you're dismissed." Josiah knew that the community on the ship would increase not only most obviously in quantity, but also in rarer and more sought after quality. That was exactly the type of Commander Officer that Josiah had turned out to be; and like any big brother, he didn't make it any easier on his crew at any time.
